Knotts Funeral Home
"My uncle ran a funeral home here. Bynum Weaver Funeral Home (Chapel Hill Funeral Home), which is now on Graham Street. Actually, the original funeral home is still on Graham Street but is Knotts Funeral Home now. But that was my uncle’s funeral home."
- Kathy Atwater
Located at 113 N. Graham Street, Knotts Funeral Home is part of a regional chain of Black-owned funeral homes established by William Harvey Knotts, Sr. (1926-2005) and Nettie Mae Knotts (1929-2003). The Knotts purchased their first funeral home in Sanford in 1953 and purchased the property on North Graham Street and began operation as Knotts Funeral Home in Chapel Hill in 1997. The building was originally opened as a funeral home serving the Black community in the 1940s. Bynum and Susie Weaver were directors of the business in the 1950s and 1960s and ownership was transferred to them sometime in the 1970s. They eventually sold property to George and Esther Tate in the 1980s, and the Tates owned the business until Knotts Funeral Home purchased it in 1997.
