Blanche Brown (BB): So, did you grow up in the Rogers Road area?

David Caldwell Jr. (DC): Yes I did, since the third grade.

BB: Since the third grade?

DC: Been here since the mid-sixties.

BB: Okay. Where were you before the third grade?

DC: Before that it was Merritt Mill Road in Chapel Hill. From there, it was Durham, for the first grade, and then before that it was back in Chapel Hill.

BB: Oh, okay, so you just moved around a lot when you were little?

DC: No, only a couple of times. Once I got here, it was here to stay.

BB: Here to stay, here to stay, and here you still are.

DC: Yes.

BB: What was it like moving to the Rogers Road community and growing up here?

DC: Oh gosh, when we first moved out here there were only about eight houses on the entire street, or I should say road back then, it was a dirt road, there were farms, cornfields, apple trees, cows, pastures, I mean it was, it was rural. No street lights, no sidewalks, none of those things. It was just a quiet and peaceful- I’ve said many times that our playground, if you ever look at a map, was from new NC-86 to old NC-86, and Homestead to Allen & Son Bar-B-Que.
