David Caldwell Jr. - On Basketball (clip)

Interviewed by Blanche Brown on April 24, 2012

David Caldwell Jr. (DC): And in the eighth grade I tried out for basketball, made the team.

Blanche Brown (BB): Yeah, I mean you seem like a big guy. I feel like you would be good at sports.

DC: Oh, not at all.

BB: [Laughter]

DC: And I made the team, made the eighth grade team. As a matter of fact I think I made captain.

BB: Oh wow!

DC: And I know I wanted to–no I didn't make captain in eighth grade I made captain in ninth grade and we won the championship at Phillips that year.

BB: That's great!

DC: It was really good and I think we played fourteen games and we went thirteen and one–

BB: Wow!

DC: –in the ninth grade. And of course we had some big guys from junior high school at that time then we left there and went to Chapel Hill High. Freshman or tenth grade year they moved me to the varsity which I thought was a terrible mistake.

BB: Awwww.

DC: And I did and my JV team won the championship and I wasn’t there with them, went to the varsity, played a little bit, got in there a little bit but I really didn’t learn anything that improved my game. And I think if I had stayed on the JV team I might have been a lot better, I felt a lot better right there.
