David Caldwell, Jr. (DC): So finished that, went on through the eighth grade, ninth grade, student council vice president my senior year.

Blanche Brown (BB): Oh wow.

DC: Finished up, I think my senior yearm I had no intentions of college. My senior year I got called to the office after the basketball season. I think I got, I want to say thirty-five or forty football scholarship offers and about seventy basketball scholarship offers.

BB: And you were telling me you’re not good at sports.

DC: At that time, I was not. My junior [year], until I learned, you know, what it was all about. My largest one was Clemson, had all of the HBCs, which I didn’t really know what they were. Like I said, I had never had any intentions of going to college. And that came in, and we started, coaches and people started coming around saying let’s travel, go see the campuses and soon I was like, “Wow, you know I can do this, this is fun, this is good.” And I ended up going to–my brother was being recruited by North Carolina Central and so a bunch of us took the day off and went over there and loved it. It was the campus, the people, the teachers, and I just, without even looking anywhere after, I was like this is where I want to be. So I went to Central on a basketball scholarship, played there for four years. Got out, [worked in] family businesses, stuff like that, I ended up going to the military–well Carrboro Police Department, made sergeant and stayed for two or three years, got out, did some family business, then I went into the military.
