Terrence Foushee - On the poetry club (clip)

Kathryn Wall (KW): …The moment in young people's lives when being able to express what you are feeling, is really important, at that age.

Terrence Foushee (TF): Yes, and I think that is part of the reason I ended up becoming an English teacher, again, because it didn't originally come from an appreciation for literature, and I think part of my English experience, even though I always enjoyed English class, I think what created the shift for me was the moment of, most of the time in a standard English class you are expected to write about, what we usually say is some dead white people right, some older white people that don't necessarily connect to you or your life experiences. But the shift comes when somebody asks you to write about you, to talk about something where you are the expert, and you are an expert on yourself and your own experiences, and I think that helped me develop more of an interest in writing, which with working with other poets and trying to become a better writer, ended up creating more of a love for literature and reading. And so that’s something I'm grateful for, Irwin and CJ Suitt for helping me kind of find that love and a piece of my passion.
