Terrence Foushee - On extracurricular activities (clip)

Interviewed by Kathryn Wall on July 23, 2024

Kathryn Wall (KW): Did you participate in any kind of extracurricular things in school?

Terrence Foushee (TF): Yes, I played JV basketball my freshman year, I was terrible, but I was on the team so it was like one of those great moments, but I was also in a few clubs. I was in the Future Business Leaders of America, which is so interesting. I was also in poetry club my senior year with Mr. Erwin who also still teaches at Chapel Hill High School, and Erwin, who even though I didn't have him as an English teacher everyone knew who Erwin was, because it was like the beginning of his career when I was in high school, he was the cool teacher because he was kind of the hippie teacher who took a different approach to teaching English. And one of my best friends who’s still my best friend, one of my best friends to this day, CJ Suitt, who was the first Black poet laureate of Chapel Hill, introduced me to the poetry club, and it wasn’t even as if I was like already interested in poetry, it was just an invitation from a friend, “Hey, join this with me,” and I think that was like one of the most important moments for me, especially figuring out a bit of who I am, and understanding how to take some of the experiences that I’ve had and use them as a way to teach, or as a way to connect. So poetry club, even though it wasn’t until my senior year, was probably one of the most important things that I was a part of when I was in high school.

KW: That seems like that…
