Rani Dasi - On going from homeschool to public school (clip)

Kathryn Wall (KW): …so, and when you first went to like a school building, what was that experience like?

Rani Dasi (RD): It was shocking initially in that somehow the excitement of learning wasn’t as present in a lot of the students, and so they did what they had to do to get the grades but they weren’t passionate about it. And the way we had experienced education in the home school with my mom was very much I think the way education should work… was following individual interest and passion. And so I mentioned that I was interested in numbers, and so my English might have to do more with numbers but she found a way to bridge those things that kept us interested or allowed us to follow our interest and to make education something that we just enjoyed. And I remember I would raise my hand all the time every time a teacher asked a question because it was like, “Oh I know that.” And I learned to not do that. Because she, and bless teachers, but sometimes they are still learning how to best reach children too. But I remember her saying ,“Anybody else but Rani. Anybody else?” And I was like, “But I know the answer and no one else is raising their hand.” And so it kind of taught me that that’s not the thing you do.
