William Gattis: And what we have to understand [is] that during this time we have embraced – we have embellished – we have been complicit – in relegating people to a certain area, [and] making sure that they didn’t have the right tools to live. Now, if you can call 25 dollars a week–maybe– as an income, to have your own land and houses… Pretty much, those individuals that were relegated to these areas were self-sufficient, and visionary enough to create their own space and their own narrative. Because no town services were in these areas – nothing that has to do with a quality of life, was not part of this area. These were people who were expendable, and that’s putting it lightly. So the initial premise that this story is based on is false – so everything that follows it becomes false. Because it was not the lap of luxury for Black people.
