Minister Robert Campbell - Teaching others (clip)
Interviewed by George Barrett and Kathryn Wall on October 28, 2022
Minister Robert Campbell: My grandfather and most of the builders were eager to be tutors and train other people how to do their type of work. It came in handy for us because we didn’t have to look for a summer job – because we already knew what we were going to be doing. We found out to have fun – the easier way to do it – and I’m glad that I grew up around the different types of tools, so when they sent me for a tool I knew what to go and get. My uncle Handy and my Uncle Leo – Lord forgive ‘em – a new person would come on the job and he’d send them for a brick bat. And they’d say a brick bat? And he’d say yeah, we got to hit this brick into the wall so will you go out there, look in the back of the truck, and bring back a brick bat? They’d go out there and look, and – you’d just try to hide, you know, you don’t want to be laughed at. I said, you guys just aren’t right, but think about it, while they’re out there looking they’re getting paid. Shut up Peter, they said. It was those types of things. They’d say oh man, we made a mistake in the wall – there’s only a 6 inch brick, but the opening’s 8 inches – will you go out there and get the brick stretcher? And they’d go looking. As they’d go up and up with the scaffolding, they’d say go look for a sky hook – I’m so glad I learned at a young age. It was those types of things, but at the same time we were learning, we’d have to think on our feet sometimes. Those were the ways they were testing you to see if you were paying attention whenever they were telling you things.
