Eugene Farrar - Sources of rock (clip)
Interviewed by Kathy Atwater and George Barrett on March 11, 2023
Eugene Farrar (EF): They would buy some rocks. I’m sure that they had places where they were buying them. I never knew where they bought rock and things like that. I don’t think we had a rock yard. There may have been a rock yard around here somewhere, but I don’t know where it was. They built Hargraves down here – all of those built from rocks. It had to be somewhere where they got all those rocks – same color, same texture and things like that.
George Barrett (GB): Reverend Robert Campbell, when we talked with him, said that especially for Hargraves [Community Center], people would look for bigger rocks, because it was a bigger structure, but also some smoother facing rocks on the front. Different rocks were used for different types of structures.
EF: Yeah, absolutely. Because they wanted them all to have the same color, and you can go in the woods and find some rocks – there’s plenty of rocks in the woods – but they’re dark, they have sap on them or something. But these rocks – I think back then, they used some kind of lye to clean the rocks once they laid the rock and of course, cement was on them. I guess they used some kind of – I don’t remember them having a power washer back then. They used probably a brush to clean the rock, either before they put it up there or after they finished. But they turned out pretty good. Hargraves looks really good.
