Eugene Farrar - Early work (clip)

Interviewed by Kathy Atwater and George Barrett on March 11, 2023

Eugene Farrar (EF): But those were days where they would start working in the morning before the sun came up and work till the sun went down in a lot of cases because they wanted to put in long hours – they were getting paid by the hour, not by the job. So –

George Barrett (GB): And Mr. Farrar, you said you were 12 when you went on your first build?

EF: Yeah –

GB: What was that like?

EF: Oh man, it was – pick up rocks, handle the ones that you can handle, and that wasn’t very many because the rocks – you see in that wall out there – are pretty big and pretty heavy. And at 12 years old, 13 years old, he would come by the house and pick us up – pick me up – because I was the youngest boy out of 7. And I was at home, going to school and things like that. But as far as construction work, I wasn’t built for that kind of work at 12, 13 years old.
