Jason Owens

Tommy Owens and Jason Owens are brothers who moved to Chapel Hill around 2008. Tommy is described to be someone who is “always looking out for others” and the brothers share a vision of the Chapel Hill community as a place that is safe, full of good neighbors, but changing with time. Their shared appreciation for a neighbor - “somebody who extends a helping hand to people no one else will” - reflects on how they view Chapel Hill and the people within it, even though they have some ideas for how kids could play outside and Chapel Hill could reach out that hand for the homeless a bit more.

This interview is part of the Marian Cheek Jackson Center’s Facing Our Neighbors series. Tommy Owens and his brother, Jason, reflect on their neighborhood in Chapel Hill and the neighbors they’ve had in it in the 2 years they have been living there (in 2010). They go on to describe the community bond that they share with neighbors and how the neighborhood had changed over time. The brothers describe how safe the community feels and how it has become “smaller” to them over time, but it has a couple areas it could improve. Lastly, they speak to how different the neighborhood is for a kid in the internet age.
