James "Jim" Wallace
Jim Wallace was a journalism student at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a photographer for the Daily Tar Heel, the student newspaper. In the early 1960s the newspaper decided to cover the emerging civil rights movement in Chapel Hill, and over the course of several years, Wallace captured some of the most compelling images of the struggle. Many of the activists in his pictures grew up in the historically black Northside neighborhood in Chapel Hill and their oral testimonies of struggle are available in this site, particularly in the Chapel Hill Civil Rights Oral History Collection. Wallace spent much of his career as the Director/Curator of Imaging & Photographic Services at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. In 2012, many of his images were published in a book, Courage in the Moment that is co-authored with Paul Dickson, and includes a forward by Dr. Lonnie Bunch. His work is also exhibited at the National Museum of African American History.
