William “Smitty” Smith - Owning a Business (clip)

Interviewed by Danielle Dulken on January 15, 2023

William Smith: But the thing about being in business is you have to be very careful. If you’re working outside of your capacity, you’re in trouble. So, to be successful you have to stay in your capacity.

Danielle Dulken: Because you’ll over promise if you’re outside of it?

William Smith: Well when I say your capacity, I’m talking about your business all kinds of things, so and your mental ability. If you get outside your capacity, you’re in trouble.

Danielle Dulken: Is it you’ll promise more than you can deliver?

William Smith: Well the guy that I told you is doing $30 million a year, if you meet him you would never know what he did unless he told you. You know, so it depends. You know my capacity for work was twenty people and he’s working 200-400.

Danielle Dulken: Okay that’s what you mean. I see.

William Smith: You following?

Danielle Dulken: Yes, yes. I got it now. What you’re capable of doing in terms of managing.

William Smith: That’s true. So that is something that has to be considered.

Danielle Dulken: Knowing your own limits. Knowing what makes, right. Because if you were to take on 200 people but be miserable in trying to manage it.

William Smith: See, I had a limitation. My limitation was if I don’t do it, it won’t be done right. And that limits what you do.
