Vernelle Brooks Jones and Charles Brooks - Differences between Contractors and Subcontractors (clip)
Interviewed by Kathryn Wall on March 11, 2023
Charles Brooks: Subcontractors usually they are not licensed, especially for like my grandfather and my father, they were carpenters. So, like when I say they subbed that means they would go in once the foundation was put in on a house, they would go in and do all of the framing, do all of the woodwork. And like I said they didn’t have a license at a time, so all they could do was frame, or go in and do repairs, carpentry repairs of stuff of that nature. But a general contractor is when you get enough money, because you pretty much have to have cash money to go in and take that state exam and its three different levels. One is unlimited, you can build anything for any amounts of money. Intermediate, which it used to go up to 500,000, im not quite sure what it is probably 1,000,000 now, so you can’t exceed anything over 1,000,000, that is intermediate. And just the getting license right now is up to 300,000, maybe a little more, I am not sure. But a general contractor that means you can go out and you can advertise, open our own business, and you can build for yourself. You don’t need to go out and work for someone else you work for yourself pretty much.
Kathryn Wall: So, you can take the job from start to finish?
Charles Brooks: From start to finish, where there is nothing but trees on the lot, clear the lot and start from there. I mean you pull your own permits, your building permits, you pull the whole thing, submit your plans, your drawings to the inspection department. Pretty much you own your own business. You are not working for someone else; you are working for yourself.
