Janie Alston - On activities and events at Hargraves (clip)

Janie Alston: My name is Janie Alston. I’m a Hargraves and Billy Hargraves was my first cousin. I was raised in a house right there with my grandmother. My mother lived on the corner of Lindsay and Cotton. I like to say this, I was born in Harlem Hospital in New York, but anyways I was raised in Chapel Hill. I went to nursery school here with Ms. Caldwell and I enjoyed nursery school here but I was gone by the time they had the pool here but the Hargraves Center was a safe haven place. I had Brownie Scouts and Girl Scouts over here. Before we moved away, my mother gave me a going away party here at the Center. At the time I was 14, but remember the song Sixteen Candles? Because we were going away, they played Sixteen Candles and my boyfriend at the time was Alton Purefoy but he didn’t like to dance so Keke danced with me. But just coming to the Center was a great place to go. I always had to be home before dark even though it was right here. Sometimes I would sneak out and come over but the Hargraves Center is a memorial place and we should always remember it and I’m just happy to be a Hargraves and that’s all I have to say.
