Arminta Foushee - On doing church announcements (clip)

Arminta Foushee: But I also remember, I don't know how I got pegged with this job. So in most Black churches on Sunday mornings you have the announcements that are read and said, and so I did the announcements every Sunday from the time I was 12 years old until I went off to college. And I always remember you would have the visitors stand and state who they are and if they’re visiting from another church, or perhaps who their pastor was. All this stuff would make church so long, that's why we would get out of church so late, stuff like that. And after the announcements were said, I had this motto that I would state. Every Sunday I would say, “We’re so happy to have you worshiping with us. We hope that you will come back again, and St. Paul’s motto is, ‘visitors are strangers but once.’” Every Sunday I repeated that motto, and it was so funny when I came back, when I moved back home from DC, I got stuck with the same job. After a while we dropped the motto, after a while, I did it for a couple years but after a while we dropped the motto and eventually I said, “Okay, someone else’s got to take this job because I've been doing it since I was 12 years old. I think it's time to pass the baton to someone else,” because I really did it for years after I came back.
