Hackney School

"The school was located on Merritt Mill Road. The primary building was off from the main building. And they were all wooden frame buildings, but being a child just enjoying the experience, I didn't think about the building or what was taught. But it was wonderful. And I seemed to be very happy in that setting."

- Frances Hargraves

Reverend L.H. Hackney, former principal of the Quaker Free School, opened Hackney's Educational and Industrial Institute in 1912 to better serve the needs of Orange County's Black students. The school was funded entirely by the Black community and had over 200 students in its early years. By 1917, the school faced financial difficulties and Orange County decided to withdraw its support of the Quaker school and purchase the school from Dr. Hackney, combining the Quaker school and "Hack's High" into a public school known as the Orange County Training School.
