Deloris Bynum
Deloris Bynum, the oldest of seven siblings, grew up in Chapel Hill and has been here all her life. Her mother worked in the infirmary as a nurse’s aide, and her father was a chef. In high school, Bynum was a member of the cheerleading squad, and she eventually married her high school sweetheart who was on the football team. She worked in food service at the University and participated in the Lenoir Foodworkers’ Strike in February 1969. Deloris Bynum proudly calls St. Joseph her community of worship.
Deloris Bynum - On school integration, church, and work
In this interview Deloris Bynum recounts being in the 8th grade when black students were integrated into Chapel Hill High School. Bynum says that she loved to teach children. She worked as a Nurse’s Aide in Assisted Living homes and loved older people. Bynum was an usher for the St. Joseph’s CME Church. She describes what it’s like to be a woman in the church and her favorite foods to cook. Bynum’s ex-husband worked for every Halloween on Franklin St. with college students. Bynum remembers being a fighter for her cousin who was bullied. Bynum didn’t like to see people get picked on. Bynum speaks about working for a business that made abortion equipment for underdeveloped countries. She believes kids should use education to their advantage. There is a scholarship fund named for her son who had epilepsy. This interview serves as a way for Deloris to know more about the Jackson Center and for the Jackson Center to know more about her as a community member.
