William “Smitty” Smith - Learning the Basics (clip)

Interviewed by Danielle Dulken on January 15, 2023

William Smith: Well, when you do projects, you do a project over and over and over, and then progress it. You start out with a six-break lead, then you’ll do a pier, then you’ll do something else, then you’ll do a fireplace. But then once, these are just basics that you learn. You don’t really learn the trade until you get a job and do it every day. And that’s the way we did that but when you are doing masonry, every job is different. It depends on the design but in masonry you have so many projects. I mean not projects, so many different materials you work with. You work with bricks, we work with blocks, we work with stone, we work with many other projects. Sometimes these projects are not common for our area, so every once in a while, you get a different project. But if you learn the basics of masonry, you can do most anything that involves mortar, so it's very simple after you learn the basics. So that’s it, learning the basics.
