R.D. and Euzelle Smith - On Smith Middle School (clip)
Interviewed by Alexander Stephens and Alex Biggers on January 20, 2011
Euzelle Smith (ES): Smith Middle School, and this is an aerial view of the school here. This is Sewell Elementary School and Smith Middle School and that path right there goes up to Chapel Hill High School. And over here, right in this area here, the university has built a building they call the UNC School for Excellence and Education. So it’s possible for students to start school here, go through middle school, high school, and college. So it’s a kindergarten, a K-16 campus.
R.D. Smith (RDS): Uh-huh, that’s right.
ES: Conceivably if they’re in education, they can start here, go here, go here, finish up over here in the university school. K-16.
AS: Is there anything you know of like that anywhere else?
ES: Never heard of it.
AS: You must be very proud that they did that.
ES: So these are all the other pictures, this is from the ground breaking, the shovels and the camps and all, this is the floor plan for the school, it is a great school. All of this is from…
RDS: This is her mom and dad right there. My mom and dad. That’s my mom. My mom is…my grandmama is in one of those pictures, my daughter has it.
ES: Oh she's working on it
RDS: Course this is our…This picture right here, these guys right here, the Old Hill gang, four of us still survive. That one there committed suicide, that one did. But these three are still living, they come by every now and then, every holiday, every special occasion, they come by and bring us some flowers or something. Of course that’s the two of us and our four kids. That's a picture of me and her.
RDS: Oh, this is where I spend my time.
Alex Biggers (AB): Oh this room?
RDS: Yeah, right here.
AB: I like this room a lot! Has it always been here?
RDS: It was a deck. But this area, her brother came and put those runners in and wired it and everything. But it was a deck, a little deck right outside of Lincoln, right outside of the garage that was right there. We used to go in the garage and go in the house right there, and the door would lead into the house.
