Kay Gattis - On her life as a caregiver and her faith

Interviewed by Michael A. Betts on June 28, 2022

And that’s my life, it's all about Ms. Kay, and I’m still going to help until the day I die. If they need help, I’m going to do it.

- Kay Gattis

Ms. Kay Gattis describes her upbringing in Chapel Hill, with her parents and eight siblings. She described how she took on the role of the caregiver after her mother passed and has been taking care of her siblings, nieces, nephews, and children ever since. She was not able to finish school, but understands the importance of education and worked multiple jobs to send her children to school, with assistance from community members. Ms. Kay finds joy in her faith in God and caregiving for her family, neighbors, and seniors at her job at the Seymour Center. Her goal in life is to graduate and get baptized, and she is excited to get both of those done in the near future. She emphasizes the importance of family, community, and faith, and how that has been her rock throughout her life.
