Interviewed by Hudson Vaughan on February 12, 2013
In this interview, Northside resident Edward Jones discusses a wide range of personal and community events that have shaped his life into what he sees it as today. Mr. Jones begins his story by talking about his relatives and their experiences: grandparents who worked and owned a dry-cleaners, parents who worked hard to afford nicer clothes for their family, as well as community-members that served as mentors and support networks in their own right. Edward Jones discusses the influence that church had on him while growing up, and how respect became a daily part of his routine. Jones moves into a discussion and commentary of the racial tensions he personally experienced while growing up in Chapel Hill, namely the Chapel Hill riots and burning that took place shortly after Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. Edward Jones finishes by discussing his views and experiences in the Vietnam war, and what it was like to raise his family in a foreign country before returning back to Durham, NC.
