Dr. Whitney Robinson Rivers - On healthcare and Northside

Interviewed by Jackson Devadas on March 26, 2023

"If people from the Jackson Center ever had a question or even other neighbors would text me with questions, I was always really glad to help."

- Dr. Whitney Robinson Rivers

Dr. Whitney Robinson Rivers speaks about her experiences living in Northside, primarily relating to the topics of healthcare and caregiving. She begins by describing the ethos of caring that drew her to move to the Northside; she always wanted to raise and grow her family in a community in which people looked out for one another. She goes on to discuss her work as a reproductive health epidemiologist and her informal role as COVID advisor for the Jackson Center. Specifically, she talks about helping out with the local vaccine clinic, staying up-to-date on COVID-19 science, sharing information via Twitter, and providing neighbors with supplies and a listening ear. Later in the interview, she expands on other forms of care that are present in the neighborhood, namely formal and informal childcare services. Finally, she ends the interview speaking about the ways in which the Northside community members provide their own forms of self-care when typical avenues of healthcare fail to provide adequate care.
