This interview was conducted for the Marian Cheek Jackson Center’s Facing Our Neighbors Initiative. The interview focuses almost entirely on the importance of community in the lives of the Bynums. Topics Include: Growing up in area, Mr. Bynum’s experience in the fire department, Lincoln High, farming for both of them, their marriage, changes in their neighborhood in Carrboro, building their home, First Baptist Church, comradery in fire department, importance of community, racial issues in Carrboro, church’s role in community, vision for Chapel Hill, best and worst neighbors of their lives, Civil Rights and protests, church politics, common friends.
