Coretta Sharpless - On the Legacy of Northside Elementary School

Interviewed by Nya Smythe and Kathy Atwater on July 14, 2023

Principal Coretta Sharpless retold the past of Northside Elementary School (NES) and discussed the re-opening of NES. She proudly highlighted how students carry out NES values through community engagements and commemoration. The Northside Timeline and preservation of archival materials from OCTS, Lincoln High, and Northside Elementary attest to the linking of past and present. Sharpless described the NES standard of “creation over consumption” and examples of this model in the gardens and the classroom. The interview concluded with how NES frames conversations about race. The interview also discusses her early memories of community support in Northside and her book Sharp Devotionals.
