Merritt School

"We went to a little country school back of our house [run by] Lottie Merritt. It was a school where we [went] from [grades] 1 through 7 and then we would take a test and go to high school at Orange County Training School."

- Isabel Atwater

Lottie Merritt ran a country school known as Merritt School that served early grades students in the rural area adjoining Chapel Hill off 15-501. She served as principal and the only teacher, managing students in seven grades. Isabel Atwater remembered that it was a "good sized group" and the one teacher" would do this class now and the next class later and the next class later." Students who finished at Merritt School took a test to move on to high school.
